Privacy Policy

This privacy policy has been compiled to better serve those who are concerned with how their “Personally identifiable information” (PII) is being used online. PII, as used in U.S. privacy law and information security, is information that can be used on its own or with other information to identify, contact, or locate a single person, or to identify an individual in context. Please read our privacy policy carefully to get a clear understanding of how we collect, use, protect, or otherwise handle your Personally Identifiable Information in accordance with our website.

What Kind of Personal Data We Collect and Why We Collect It

Comments

When visitors leave comments on our website, we collect the data displayed in the comments form, as well as the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string in order to help spam detection.

An anonymised string created on the basis of your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to check if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here. After approval of your comment, your profile picture will also be visible to the public next to your comment.

Media

If you upload images on this website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Website visitors can download and extract any location data from these images.

Contact forms

When you fill in the contact form on our website, we’ll ask you for a number of pieces of personal information, such as your name, email address, as well as other details. Obviously, this is required so we can respond to your request.

If you don’t use or submit an online form on our website, no data collection will occur in that regard.

We will store the information you provide to us in our website database, and a copy will be sent to our email client. Such storage lets us efficiently access your data and respond to your request.

We will not use these data for any other purpose, without your express further consent. We will never sell your information to any third-party.

We will only ask you for the minimum amount of information necessitated to appropriately fulfil your request. This will usually include your name, contact details, and any specific information in regards to your request.

Cookies

This website uses cookies – small text files that are placed on your machine to help the site provide better user experience. Generally, cookies serve to retain user preferences, store information for things like comments, and provide anonymised tracking data to third-party applications, such as Google Analytics.

As a rule, cookies will contribute to better browsing experience. However, you may prefer to disable cookies on this website. The most effective way to do this is to disable your web browser’s cookies. We suggest consulting the “Help” section of your browser or taking a look at the About Cookies website which offers guidance for all modern browsers.

If you place a comment on our website, you may opt-in to save your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so you don’t have to fill in your details every time you place a comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in to this website, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you exit your browser.

When you log in, we’ll also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will be active for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie contains no personal data and only indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after one day.

Embedded Content from Other Websites

Articles on this website may include embedded content (articles, images, videos, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

Those websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Amazon

Amazon, a third-party affiliate marketing network, uses cookies to ensure we get a commission if you purchase a product after clicking on a link that takes you to the site of one of their merchants. You can read Amazon’s Privacy Policy here.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to better understand what people search for and look for on our website.

When people visit our website, information about their visit (such as which pages they explore, how long they stay on the website, etc.) is sent in an anonymous form to Google Analytics (which is controlled by Google).

The data contain information about anyone who uses our website from your computer, and there is no way to identify individuals from the data. As analytics information is not personal data, we do not specifically ask for your prior consent.

In addition to Google Analytics, we use a number of industry-standard Google services to provide particular pieces of website content. These include:

  • Google Fonts: We may use one or more of Google’s web fonts to ensure that our website content is displayed in a clear and consistent manner across all the different types of devices and browsers.
  • Google Maps: We may use Google’s mapping services to provide dynamic geographic maps on our website.
  • Google Recaptcha: We may use Google’s Recaptcha service (which provides the ‘I Am Not A Robot’ functionality) on our web contact forms. This is a security measure to thwart the abuse of our contact forms by automated programs.

Each of these services involves our website making a connection to one or more Google servers, and may result in Google placing cookies on your device.

You can get familiar with Google’s privacy policy here.

Much like the grand majority of websites, we use social media cookies from Facebook on our website. The cookies are placed by Facebook, and we use them to determine the effectiveness of the social media campaigns that we operate.

If you are not logged into Facebook when you view our website, then it is not possible for any personal information about your visit to be collected, and therefore we do not specifically ask for your prior consent.

If you are logged into Facebook when you view our website, then Facebook will know when you visit us. We do not have any access to the details of those personal data, as you have consented to share it with Facebook, not with us. We just get to see anonymised data about the numbers of people who have responded to our advertising or other social media activity.

You can acquaint yourself with Facebook’s privacy policy here.

You can always use your browser’s ‘private’ or ‘incognito’ mode to browse websites anonymously.

Whom We Share Your Data with

We don’t share knowingly your data with any third-party providers.

How Long We Retain Your Data

If you place a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and automatically approve any follow-up comments instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

If you’ve got in touch with us through the contact form, we’ll keep your details indefinitely.

If you’ve opted-in for our mailing list, you can review, edit, and unsubscribe at any time.

What Rights You Have over Your Data

If you either have an account on this website or have placed any comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you’ve provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where We Send Your Data

Visitor comments go through an automated spam detection service, Akismet. You can read their privacy policy here.

How We Protect Your Data

  • Dedicated security software: We operate a dedicated security scanning and access control software. This software limits login attempts to our website, blocks potentially malicious attempts to access our services, and regularly performs full file system scans.
  • Data encryption: This website is secured with an SSL encryption, which means that all traffic to and from our servers is encrypted. This also applies to our own administrative access to the website, as well as to that of users of our services.

If there are any questions regarding this privacy policy, you may contact us using the information below.
